Manuel Neuer has signed a one-year contract extension at Bayern Munich through to 2026.

Neuer, 38, has been at the club since 2011, winning 11 straight Bundesliga titles between 2012 and 2023, in addition to two Champions League trophies in 2013 and 2020.

His current contract had been due to expire in the summer of 2025 and having retired from international duty after Euro 2024 — having won 124 caps for Germany and become the country’s most-capped goalkeeper in history — there were suggestions he might end his club career, too.

Neuer’s new contract will extend his playing days beyond his 40th birthday. Explaining the decision to sign the extension, he told Bayern Munich’s official website: “I really enjoy football and want to continue to be a player for FC Bayern. I’m still hungry and looking forward to another year at this special club. We’ve always had good discussions, which is a nice feeling. It feels good, we still have many common goals.”

Neuer, who made 203 appearances for Schalke prior to joining Bayern in 2011, has played in 547 matches for the Bavarian club across his 14 years.

Max Eberl, the club’s board member for sport, described Neuer as “the best goalkeeper of his generation and already an icon of FC Bayern.”

“When you talk about goalkeeping in our time, you talk about Manuel Neuer, and that’s true worldwide. He is an absolute role model – on and off the pitch. We are delighted that this uniquely successful relationship is continuing.”
