Manchester City midfielder Jill Roord suffers ACL injury

Manchester City midfielder Jill Roord is set for an extended period on the sidelines after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury.

The 26-year-old Netherlands international was forced off nine minutes into Wednesday’s Continental Cup group stage victory over Manchester United at the Joie Stadium.

Roord will remain with City’s medical team to begin her rehabilitation.

The injury will likely see Roord miss the remainder of the Women’s Super League season and the 2024 Olympic Games, which the Netherlands remain in contention to qualify for after progressing to the Nations League semi-finals in December.

The midfielder joined City from Wolfsburg last summer and has been an important figure this term, providing six goals and two assists in 11 WSL appearances.

Roord becomes the latest high-profile women’s player to suffer an ACL injury; five of the 20 nominees for the 2022 Ballon d’Or Feminin had ACL injuries in 2022, while Roord is the second 2023 Ballon d’Or Feminin nominee to sustain an injury of such nature this month after Chelsea forward Sam Kerr suffered an ACL injury in training.

City sit second in the WSL, three points behind leaders Chelsea, and return to action against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.
