Inter Miami‘s world tour continues and the MLS team recently defeated a Hong Kong side 4-1 in front of 40,000 fans at the Hong Kong Stadium. However, the team coached by Tata Martino did so without Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez on the pitch.
While Spaniards Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets took the field, their South American teammates were mere spectators on the bench, much to the annoyance of the crowd, as the vast majority, if not all, of the fans went to watch Messi play.
David Beckham was booed
Once the game was over, the president and co-owner of the MLS franchise, David Beckham, thanked the fans who went to the stadium to watch Inter Miami, being greeted with a huge booing and shouts asking for a ‘refund’ that interrupted the Englishman’s speech.
The truth is that fans in Hong Kong paid considerable sums of money to see Messi play, with tickets costing around $460 for those who managed to get one, as they were sold out within minutes of being announced and put on sale.
The reason why Messi didn’t play
Messi was left on the bench due to a minor hamstring pull, an injury that has been bothering him since the game against Cristiano Ronaldo’s Al-Nassr, where he played only seven minutes in Inter Miami’s 6-0 thrashing at the hands of their opponents.
On the other hand, Suarez also seems to have some muscular discomfort that prevented him from playing in the last game, being kept by Martino on the bench.
