Luis Suarez wants to enjoy ‘last stage’ with Lionel Messi at Inter Miami

Luis Suarez is looking forward to enjoying the final chapter of his career playing alongside his close friend Lionel Messi after joining Inter Miami.

The legendary striker is the latest acquisition from Barcelona‘s former squad to join the MLS team’s roster, with Jordi Alba, Sergio Busquets, and of course Messi moving to the United States.

The 37-year-old opted for a new challenge after a successful stint in the Brasileirao with Porto-Alegre-based side Gremio, where he was crowned top goalscorer in the division.

The Uruguayan was speaking in Hong Kong, where David Beckham‘s team are currently on a pre-season tour, and hinted that his retirement is edging closer as he enters his ‘last stage’ with Messi.

“I am very happy after many years of playing together to share not only on the field, but also day to day with him,” Suarez said to reporters.

“It is very nice to be able to enjoy this last stage that we have left as soccer players and to enjoy it also as friends.

Things haven’t gone to plan for Suarez, Messi and co., however, after Inter Miami were thrashed 6-0 by Cristiano Ronaldo’s Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia on Wednesday, albeit without the Portuguese on the pitch.

Suarez’s contract at Inter Miami

As previously reported in the Miami Herald, Suarez signed a one-year contract as a free agent and the club will use the Specific Allocation Fund to keep his salary below the Franchise Player threshold.

The outlet also states that Suarez could fill one of the team’s three Designated Player (DP) vacancies, which enables clubs to give players a salary above $651,000 per annum, the new limit established in 2023.

There are other ways that the former Liverpool frontman can avoid going over the limit. For example, there is a loophole called Targeted Allocation Money, where he would receive a lower salary but would be able to earn a significant bonus from his contract.
