According to Spanish outlet Sport, Arsenal and Chelsea have initiated contact to sign Everton midfielder Amadou Onana, amid reported interest from Barcelona.

The Belgian star has been a standout performer for Everton, and he could depart the club this summer in pursuit of trophies at a bigger club.

According to Sport, Arsenal and Chelsea have reached out to Everton and have made inquiries about the midfielder. However, Barcelona also have an interest in signing the former Lille player.

Questions have arisen regarding Barcelona’s ability to meet Everton’s asking price, as the Toffees are seeking £51 million for their prized asset, while Barcelona are reportedly only willing to pay up to £34 million for the 22-year-old.

While Chelsea and Arsenal have been linked with an interest in signing him, it would be surprising if Chelsea made an approach. They already have Moises Caicedo, Enzo Fernandez, Romeo Lavia, and Lesley Ugochukwu, all of whom can play in holding midfield. Additionally, Conor Gallagher is also capable of filling that role.

In contrast, with concerns over Thomas Partey’s poor injury record and uncertainties surrounding the futures of Mohamed Elneny, Jorginho, and Albert Sambi Lokonga, Arsenal may seek significant investment in the midfield department this summer. As a result, they could make a genuine attempt to sign Onana from Everton to bolster their midfield options.
