Sergio Aguero and the World Cup celebrations: I drank a lot and Messi got mad… that’s why it hit me

Argentina‘s players celebrated their World Cup win as passionately as many fans surely did, but it was a former player, Sergio Aguero, who was the life of the party.

The retired footballer has revealed how he may have had a bit too much to drink when he joined the team to celebrate their success.

Aguero has used the streaming platform Twitch to tell a number of stories from Qatar, but there are two gems to highlight.

The first was when Lionel Messi told him, as a friend, to stop drinking, perhaps remembering that Aguero had to retire due to a heart problem.

« I drank a lot, but I wasn’t eating, that’s why it hit me, we were world champions, if something had to happen to me, why not there in Qatar? » said Aguero.

« At one point, Leo got angry and told me ‘stop’. What do you mean, stop? We are world champions. I was so good, so happy, that I think my heart was perfect.

« And because I was happy, the alcohol hit me twice. »

Aguero couldn’t handle the lap of honor

The other gem of Aguero‘s talk came when he described what he went through to present the most iconic image of the celebration when he lifted Lionel Messi on his shoulders, carrying what was thought to be the World Cup, although there is already a theory that this was a replica.

« I can’t believe I lifted the World Cup, that I lifted the best in the world, » said Aguero.

« My back hurt a lot, when I lifted it I said: ‘S***, it’s heavy’. On top of that, ‘Muchachos’ was playing and I was moving my shoulders so that he would jump, but I started to feel some stitches in my back.

« I couldn’t even turn around, if I turned around, I was going to end up in a hospital. He realized it because I looked at him, we exchanged glances. ‘All good, you’re a world champion, but my back hurts,’ and that’s when he got off. »

He also shared his pride in carrying the cup for about 15 minutes, bearing in mind it weighs about six kilos and his arm was already hurting.

He also said that he almost forgot his son because he went to Argentina to continue with the party.

« The lads wanted to take me with them to Argentina. They told me to hurry because the plane was leaving and I said: ‘Come on, let’s go. Let’s present the passport, everything,' » said Aguero.

« I was leaving with the National Team and then I remembered that I had my son in the apartment, I couldn’t stand him up like that.

« I called Benja and told him I was heading over to him. I was so excited that I forgot everything. »
