Novak Djokovic, currently ranked fifth in the world in tennis’ ATP ranking, was full of praise for Lionel Messi after the Argentine star won the World Cup last Sunday.
The Serbian, a well-known football fan, took the time to talk about the Argentinean’s personality, just days before the start of the 2023 men’s tennis season.
« As a sports fan, as a football fan, of course I admire Messi and respect him a lot. I think most of the world is happy with his achievement and what he has managed to do, » Djokovic said.
« Him being humble, a down to earth guy, not taken away by success all these years is something I feel like serves as a great example to all the children that look up to him, they want to be like him. »
Djokovic bragged about watching the final at Lusail Stadium
The former world number one was present at the Lusail Stadium in Qatar to witness the 2022 World Cup final between Argentina and France, which after a 3-3 draw, was won by the South Americans via a penalty shootout.
« I was really fortunate to be there present, » said Djokovic. « By many people, it’s the best World Cup final ever. What an outstanding finish, the way they won it, the way they were welcomed at home. »
