Following Uruguay‘s elimination from the World Cup, Edinson Cavani furiously struck the VAR monitor as he left the field.
Now, with a disciplinary decision set to be made about the incident, Cavani has doubled down on his action.
The Valencia striker has claimed that if he is sanctioned by the FIFA Disciplinary Committee for hitting the VAR monitor, the referee of that match, Daniel Siebert, should be put in prison.
« If they sanction me for hitting the VAR [monitor], the referee, for having knocked us out of the World Cup, they have to put him in jail, because they are mistakes that, with the VAR, all the cameras and all the referees who are behind, they cannot make, » he said in an interview to El Larguero on Cadena Ser.
On December 5, the FIFA Disciplinary Committee opened proceedings against Cavani, along with his national teammates Jose Maria Gimenez (who struck a FIFA official), Diego Godin and Fernando Muslera (for their protests towards the referee), at the end of the December 2 match against Ghana.
« I’m worried (about a possible sanction). Yes, of course it worries me, because it would mean being out of competitions with my teammates, my club and my national team. It worries me. But these are things that happen, » he said.
« But you have to take the player’s side, not just the referee’s and others, but the player’s side to see what has happened, why it has happened and why things have happened the way they have happened. »
« It’s fine that we have to maintain our conduct and so on, but we are human beings and when sometimes the things that happen on the pitch are felt with passion and you work so hard to get there and compete and this and that and you have to live these situations, as it is not the first time we have had to live, it may also be that the reaction of a player inside can be, not justified, but a little more forgiven, » he added.
Cavani admitted that hitting the VAR monitor « are things you shouldn’t do » but that « sometimes in football certain things sometimes lead you to react and to do certain things that sometimes escape you because of the adrenaline that we have, because of that euphoria we have at that moment, and we make mistakes, » he said.
