Sam Kerr has agreed a deal in principle to extend her contract at Chelsea.

The 30-year-old’s existing contract expires in the summer but she is soon to commit her future to the west London club.

Kerr is sidelined for the remainder of the 2023-24 season after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury during a warm weather training camp in Morocco earlier this month. The Australia captain underwent successful surgery shortly after sustaining the injury.

Her long-term injury means Kerr has likely played her last Chelsea match under manager Emma Hayes, who is departing at the end of the season to take the USWNT head coach role.

Kerr joined Chelsea in 2019 from Chicago Red Stars and last signed fresh terms in November 2021. She has scored 99 goals in 128 matches for Chelsea, winning four WSL titles, three FA Cups and two League Cups.

“With the announcement (of Kerr’s injury) the focus for Sam right now is on rehab,” Hayes said when asked about Kerr’s contract situation on earlier this month.

“I’m sure when the time is right to discuss her future that will come from Sam and the club, but Sam loves Chelsea and Chelsea loves Sam, so I think that’s the most important thing to say on that front.”
