Lauren Hemp has signed a new three-year Manchester City contract to keep her at the club until 2027.
Hemp’s existing deal had been set to expire at the end of the season but she has now committed her future to City.
The 23-year-old England winger has played an important role in City’s Women’s Super League (WSL) title challenge this season, providing nine goals and six assists in 18 appearances for the league leaders.
Hemp joined the club from Bristol City in 2018 and has scored 65 goals in 157 appearances, winning the both the FA Cup and Continental Cup twice during her six seasons in Manchester.
“This is a special team,” Hemp said. “I want to take my game to the next level, and I feel like I’m capable of doing that here. The WSL is the best league to be in.
“I feel at home here in Manchester. I’m so passionate about this club and there’s no place I’d rather be. I’m very excited to keep this journey going for the next few years.”
Hemp is a record four-time PFA Young Player of the Year winner and has become an integral part of the England senior squad since her move to City.
She made her Lionesses debut in 2019 and played important roles in the Euro 2022 triumph and run to the 2023 World Cup final.
City’s director of football Nils Nielsen added: “Lauren is fearless, hardworking and one of the game’s brightest young talents. What she has achieved in such a short career is incredible, and we can’t wait to see what the next few years hold for us a team and her as a player.
“The natural talent, ability and determination Lauren possesses is obvious, and we feel that she can become one of the best players in the world. We’ve only just scratched the surface of what she can do.”
City are three points clear of second-place Chelsea in the WSL, with Emma Hayes’ side having played one game fewer. The club are targeting a first WSL title since 2016.
City return to action on Sunday with a trip to Hemp’s former side Bristol City.
How important is Hemp’s new deal to Manchester City?
Much admired by Arsenal and Barcelona, Hemp’s renewal is a huge boost for City. The fact that she has signed a three-year extension is a real statement that she wants to be part of this project.
The 23-year-old winger is a devastating threat to City’s attack but as shown for England, she can also play in the No.9 which may prove crucial in the short and long-term given Bunny Shaw’s season-ending injury.
Hemp sits third in City’s all-time scoring ranks (65) behind Shaw and Georgia Stanway and there will be many more to come.
