Angel City FC has parted ways with head coach Becki Tweed, the club announced Monday.

Tweed, 35, departs after being promoted to head coach from interim head coach in June 2023, following the firing of previous head coach Freya Coombe. Under Tweed, Angel City (ACFC) finished 12th overall in the 2024 standings, eight points off playoff position, although the club was docked three points in October for a salary cap violation. The club has disputed part of the sanctions and argues it did not exceed the cap.

“Despite the challenges and results of a tough season, Becki’s resilience and determination leave a lasting impression,” ACFC technical director Mark Wilson said in a club statement. “She departs ACFC well-respected, and we have no doubt wherever she lands next, her talents and character will make a significant impact. We thank Becki for her contributions over the past two seasons and wish her the very best in her journey ahead.”

Tweed put together a 6-1-4 record after taking over as interim in 2023, halting a five-game winless streak and earning Angel City its first playoff berth by finishing fifth overall in the standings. ACFC then lost 1-0 to OL Reign, but Tweed’s early success laid the foundation for optimism going into her first full season as head coach. However, Tweed’s 2024 W-L-T record was 7-13-6 with a -13 goal differential.

ACFC assistant coach Eleri Earnshaw will serve as interim head coach while the club conducts a hiring search.

Tweed departs on the heels of former general manager Angela Hucles, who parted ways with Angel City last week. New club owners Willow Bay and Bob Iger, who acquired controlling interest in the club in July, appear to be implementing top-level changes, including taking over the Los Angeles Rams training facility at California Lutheran University in order to provide permanent training grounds for the team after operating out of temporary structures on campus.

Will there be more changes?

For all of its dazzling brand presence, Angel City has yet to put together a truly good season. That was only to be expected early on as an expansion team, but it seems the club still has not managed to get back into a rhythm after stumbling early on with the initial hire of Eni Aluko as sporting director. Aluko transitioned out of the role after a year and then ultimately left the club. Hucles was promoted into the role from her original role as VP of player development.

At least one remaining question mark is current team president Julie Uhrman, who was sanctioned alongside Hucles for the aforementioned salary cap violation. Under Uhrman’s guidance, the club has rapidly grown into a marketing powerhouse in NWSL — at the beginning of 2023, she expressed ambitions to make ACFC the first women’s sports team with a billion-dollar valuation. Given her apparent success on the financial side, new ownership may be satisfied to simply make changes on the sporting side, at least for now.
