Arsenal striker Vivianne Miedema will undergo “minor knee surgery” and miss several weeks of action.
The Netherlands international was forced to leave her side’s international camp last month due to an injury. She started the 3-0 defeat to Spain on February 23, but was substituted at half-time.
Miedema, 27, is expected to miss several games for Arsenal including Sunday’s north London derby against Tottenham Hotspur at Emirates Stadium.
Arsenal head coach Jonas Eidevall said: “She requires minor knee surgery and that is going to have her off the pitch for several weeks. We will have an update on that after the surgery and when we see how she is progressing.
“She doesn’t need the surgery because of those 45 minutes she played against Spain. She would have needed surgery anyway, so it was nothing that the Dutch team did that complicated or made the situation worse. It was a situation that needed to be fixed anyway.”
Miedema suffered an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury in December 2022 during a Champions League fixture against Lyon, consequently missing eleven months of action including the 2023 Women’s World Cup where the Netherlands were knocked out in the quarterfinals by eventual winners Spain.
She returned from injury in October 2023 and has made 15 appearances this season.
Leah Williamson, who also missed the 2023 World Cup after sustaining an ACL injury in April 2023, is in contention to play against Tottenham this weekend.
The England captain, 26, withdrew from the national team last month due to what Arsenal described as a “minor hamstring injury”, missing friendlies against Italy and Austria.
Arsenal are third in the Women’s Super League, three points off league leaders Chelsea.
