You may have noticed that Real Madrid have been quiet this transfer window. In fact, Los Blancos are often quiet at this time of year when it comes to signing players.
The pattern is no coincidence, the club do not believe in the winter market and for a number of years now have tried to do as little business as possible at this time of year.
It is not an easy period to operate in, with deals often being hasty and inflated by perceived necessity.
Real Madrid think that signings made in January are a bigger risk than summer transfers and they haven’t made a major signing at this time since Emmanuel Adebayor, at the express request of Jose Mourinho.
One factor in this is that any players who are available in January are often ones who are not considered vital by their clubs and thus arrive at their new team short of fitness and lacking match sharpness.
That means it’s very hard for them to make the instant impact expected of January signings.
An eye on the market
That’s not to say that Real Madrid aren’t keeping tabs on the situation, as they are constantly monitoring the market for opportunities.
However, they are not pushing for anything to happen, wary as they are of doing deals with the urgency of the winter window.
That goes for outgoings as well as incomings as the club will not be looking to force any players out.
There are several players who are lacking game time and could be moved on, but the club doesn’t want to create any conflicts with players who could still play a part this season.
Arrivals: from the academy or in the summer
There has been lots going on behind the scenes, but nothing which has prompted Madrid to want to act now, rather than wait until the summer. Squad harmony is key at this stage in the season.
If Carlo Ancelotti needs any reinforcements in the short term, he knows where to find them: the B team. Players like Mario Martin and Arribas could see more game time before the campaign is over.
Then, in the summer, the club will be able to act more calmly and with a better view of their budgetary possibilities. The priority will be Jude Bellingham.
