Arsenal have reportedly been dealt a blow in their pursuit of Ivan Fresneda with the right-back set to remain at Real Valladolid until the summer.
The Gunners have been heavily linked with a move for the 18-year-old this month in a potential £13million deal.
Borussia Dortmund have also been touted as a possible destination for the teenager, but it was Mikel Arteta’s side that were believed to be leading the race.
Fresneda has enjoyed a breakthrough season in Vallodolid’s return to LaLiga where he has featured in 12 games in all competitions.
Arsenal have spoken to the player’s representatives over a transfer, but it appears they will have to wait until the end of the campaign to secure his services.
Commenting on the saga, Italian reporter Fabrizio Romano tweeted: “Understand Ivan Fresneda will stay at Valladolid in January unless there are twists in the final hours.
“Arsenal & Borussia Dormtund wanted Spanish talented RB but deal was never done, Fresneda now expected to stay and help Valladolid.
“Next step: top club move in the summer.”
Any move for Fresneda in January would have likely seen him loaned back to Valladolid until the end of the term.
Fresneda indicated his desire to stay at the Estadio Jose Zorrilla on Sunday after leaving training.
The youngster was mobbed by fans in his car as he signed autographs where supporters quizzed him over his future.
In a video that has went viral, Fresneda told fans: “No I’m not leaving, calm down.”
With Arsenal poised to miss out on Fresneda, they could also be knocked back in their quest to prise Moises Caicedo away from Brighton.
Offers of £60m and £70m have been rejected by the Seagulls for the Ecuadorian midfielder, who are insisting he is not for sale.
It remains to be seen whether the north Londoners launch a third bid, which will likely eclipse the £72m they paid for Nicolas Pepe from Lille in 2019.
