Marco Reus will leave Borussia Dortmund at the end of the season, ending his 12-year spell with the side after both parties mutually agreed not to extend the player’s contract, the German club announced on Friday.

The 34-year-old Dortmund academy product rejoined the club from Borussia Mochengladbach in 2012 and has gone on to make 424 appearances so far, scoring 168 goals and contributing 128 assists.

“I’m incredibly grateful for and proud of this special time at my club Borussia Dortmund” Reus said in a statement.

“I have spent more than half of my life at this club and enjoyed every day, even though there have of course been difficult moments too.”

Reus has been a talismanic figure at Dortmund, winning the DFB-Pokal in 2016-17 and 2020-21 and reaching the Champions League final under Jürgen Klopp in 2013.

Dortmund sit fifth in the Bundesliga table, but have reached the last four of the Champions League. They beat Paris Saint-Germain 1-0 at the Westfalenstadion in the first leg of their semifinal on Wednesday.

“I already know now that I will find it difficult to say goodbye at the end of the season,” Reus said. “And yet I’m happy that there is now clarity and that we can focus fully on the very important final games that we still have to play.

“We have a big objective in our sights that we all want to achieve together. To do so, we will need every single one of our unbelievable fans, to whom I would like to express my sincere thanks for their unbelievable support over the years.”

Dortmund face Augsburg in the Bundesliga on Saturday.
