Toni Kroos will make his decision on whether or not to return to the German national team in the coming weeks.

The 34-year-old midfielder will communicate his choice, at least internally, ahead of the March international break.

If he decides to play at this summer’s European Championships on home soil, coach Julian Nagelsmann will include him in his upcoming squad, which will be announced on March 14. If not, the idea is that he will no longer be called up.

Germany visit France on March 23 and host the Netherlands on March 26 in Frankfurt, both friendlies.

The Athletic had revealed on January 31 that Kroos was reconsidering his retirement from international football. The player himself acknowledged this in Germany, at the press conference ahead of the Leipzig vs Real Madrid Champions League last-16 first leg.

“Yes, it is a possibility. I’m thinking about it, but I don’t know yet,” he said.

He stepped away from the international game after Euro 2020 to spend more time with his family and to give himself the best chances of continuing to perform at the highest level with Real Madrid, which he has.

Kroos has not yet made his decision, nor has he decided his future at Real Madrid either.

The board informed him some time ago that he can renew his contract, which expires on 30 June, whenever he wishes.

Both Carlo Ancelotti and his team-mates are keen for him to continue for at least one more season.
