Southampton goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale is set to undergo surgery on a suspected fractured finger.

The 26-year-old played the entirety of Southampton’s 2-0 defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers last Saturday.

However, the England international is set for a spell on the sidelines as he is due to have an operation on his finger on Wednesday. It has yet to be confirmed how long he will be out.

Ramsdale’s absence could see the return of No.2 goalkeeper Alex McCarthy to Russell Martin’s starting line-up.

The 34-year-old goalkeeper, who started Southampton’s first two Premier League games of the season prior to Ramsdale’s arrival, has not played since the penalty shootout victory over Everton in the League Cup on September 17.

Gavin Bazunu remains sidelined with an injury. The 22-year-old Republic of Ireland goalkeeper is yet to make an appearance this campaign.

Last week, Ramsdale was included in Lee Carlsey’s final England squad as interim manager for the upcoming Nations League games against Greece (November 14) and the Republic of Ireland (November 17).

Ramsdale joined Southampton from Arsenal during the summer transfer window after the two clubs reached an agreement on a £25million deal.

Arsenal received £18m upfront and will receive a further £1m should Southampton avoid relegation this season, with the remaining £6m being based on incentives.

Since making the permanent move to St Mary’s, he has made ten appearances in all competitions for his new side.
