Six people have been arrested in relation to the killing of South African footballer Luke Fleurs.
The 24-year-old Kaizer Chiefs defender was shot during an alleged hijacking incident in Johannesburg on April 3.
Police say six suspects were traced and arrested in Soweto, a township south west of Johannesburg, on Wednesday morning. The search for more suspects is ongoing.
Police believe the suspects are “part of a syndicate that is responsible for car hijacking in Gauteng”.
The suspects are expected to appear at Roodepoort Magistrate’s Court on Friday April 12 2024.
Fleurs’ car, which had been stripped, was also recovered by police on Monday.
A statement from the South African Police Service said the team, led by Mbuso Khumalo, the Gauteng deputy provincial commissioner crime detection major general, were “working around the clock to ensure that (those responsible) are arrested and brought to book”.

A moment of silence was held for Fleurs ahead of Kaizer Chiefs’ fixture against Chippa United on Saturday.
After spells with Ubuntu and SuperSport United, he joined Kaizer Chiefs in October 2023. Fleurs did not make a senior appearance for the side but had twice been in the matchday squad.
He made three appearances for South Africa at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021.
“We are profoundly shocked and saddened to learn of the tragic and untimely passing of one of our players, Luke Fleurs,” Kaizer Chiefs said last Thursday.
“The club’s management, players, and the technical team are all profoundly upset by this devastating turn of events.
“We convey our heartfelt condolences to his family and friends during this extremely difficult time. The club will make further announcements at a later stage.”
