Manchester City are attempting to complete a deadline day move for Porto midfielder Nico Gonzalez.

There is no agreement or guarantee that a deal will be agreed by Monday night’s deadline but negotiations are ongoing.

The Athletic reported on January 31 that City were exploring a move for Gonzalez, who was high on the club’s shortlist for a central midfielder alongside Douglas Luiz of Juventus.

Gonzalez is capable of playing in both the No. 6 and No. 8 positions and fits the profile of midfielder City have been looking for.

The 23-year-old was a graduate of Barcelona’s La Masia youth system and made 37 first-team appearances for the Catalan club before spending 2022-23 on loan at Valencia.

Barca have a 40 per cent sell-on clause as part of the €8.5million deal that saw him sold to Porto in July 2023.

Gonzalez is yet to make his senior international debut for Spain but has played capped up to under-21 level, has gone to make 68 appearances in total for Porto, including 29 in all competitions this season.

City have had a busy January window, signing centre-backs Vitor Reis, Juma Bah and Abdukodir Khusanov from Palmeiras, Real Valladolid and and Lens respectively, while also adding forward Omar Marmoush from Eintracht Frankfurt.

Pep Guardiola’s side, who are fourth in the Premier League, are next in action against in the FA Cup fourth round at Leyton Orient on February 8.
