Julian Nagelsmann names new-look Germany squad for Nations League

Germany head coach Julian Nagelsmann has named his first squad since the international retirements of Manuel Neuer, Thomas Muller, Ilkay Gundogan and Toni Kroos.

Stuttgart’s uncapped midfielder Angelo Stiller has been included, but there is no place in the squad for Bayern Munich’s Leon Goretzka or Real Madrid’s Antonio Rudiger.

Rudiger’s absence was planned, with the 31-year-old using the period to recuperate following a busy summer.

There is no room for Serge Gnabry, either, despite his winning goal for Bayern against Wolfsburg last weekend, nor for Borussia Dortmund’s Julian Brandt or Karim Adeyemi.

Aleksandar Pavlovic, who missed the European Championship through illness, has been called up.

Alexander Nubel, who is currently on loan at Stuttgart from Bayern and who was omitted from the Euro 2024 squad, has replaced Neuer.

Germany exited the European Championships on home soil after defeat to eventual champions Spain in the quarter-finals.

“In general, we were very satisfied with how each player fulfilled his role at the European Championships,” Nagelsmann said. “That’s why we now want to give the European Championship squad the chance again in the first games after the tournament.

“The only newcomer is Angelo Stiller, who performed very well in Stuttgart last season and again this season. In midfield, we have to replace two players, Ilkay Gündogan and Toni Kroos, who have retired. Overall, that’s enough changes in the national team for the moment.”

Germany are beginning a new Nations League campaign next month and will play Hungary in Dusseldorf on September 7th and then face the Netherlands in Amsterdam on 10th September. Bosnia are the fourth team in the group.
