Germany goalkeeper Manuel Neuer has confirmed his retirement from international football.
The 38-year-old was capped 124 times for Germany since making his international debut in 2009, making him the nation’s fifth highest capped player and the most for any goalkeeper.
Neuer won the 2014 World Cup with his nation, one of eight major tournaments he featured in for Germany, and kept a clean sheet in the final victory over Argentina.
In a social media post, Neuer confirmed his international retirement and said: “Thank you Germany. I loved wearing the national team jersey.”
Neuer began his club career at Schalke, for whom he made over 200 first-team appearances before joining Bayern Munich in the summer of 2011.
He has since gone on to play 522 matches for Bayern, establishing himself as first choice goalkeeper for club and country for over a decade.
The goalkeeper has won 31 major honours throughout his career, including the World Cup with Germany alongside two Champions League trophies with Bayern Munich, in 2013 and 2020.
Neuer joins Ilkay Gundogan, who announced his own retirement from the national team earlier this week. The midfielder walks away having won 82 caps for his country, including leading Germany at Euro 2024.
