France’s Olivier Giroud officially announces retirement from international football

France’s all-time leading scorer, Olivier Giroud, has officially announced his retirement from international football.

The 37-year-old had previously stated in May that the European Championship in Germany will be his last major tournament for France.

But it was formally confirmed on Monday that the former Arsenal and Chelsea striker would no longer play for his country.

In a statement on Instagram, he wrote: “The dreaded moment has arrived: the moment to bid farewell to the French national team.

“My career with the French national team hasn’t always been a smooth ride. I’ve sometimes doubted and suffered criticism, but deep down I’ve never stopped believing.

“Hard work, humility and prayers have helped me through the difficult times. Thanks to the unfailing support of my wife and my four wonderful children, I’ve always found the strength to fight and come back even stronger each time.”

Giroud is France’s top scorer on 57 goals in 143 appearances, surpassing Thierry Henry’s previous record during France’s journey to the 2022 World Cup final in Qatar.

“Olivier can leave the French team with a sense of achievement,” France manager Didier Deschamps said.

“More generally, I’d like to highlight his unwavering commitment. For that, too, we must say bravo and thank you. Very attached to the blue jersey, Olivier has given himself the means to wear it 137 times, which is exceptional especially when, like him, you start your international career at the age of 25.

“It hasn’t always been easy for Olivier in the French national team, but he has never given up, always showing his seriousness, professionalism and fighting spirit.”

France exited in the semi-finals of Euro 2024 last week, falling 2-1 to eventual champions Spain. Giroud came on as a second-half substitute in that game and featured on four occasions at the tournament.

Giroud will officially sign for LAFC when the Major League Soccer summer transfer window opens on July 18.
