Czech Republic midfielder Michal Sadilek has been ruled out of the European Championship after falling off his bike and injuring his leg.

The 25-year-old, who plays for Dutch club FC Twente, captained Ivan Hasek’s side in Friday’s 7-1 friendly victory over Malta on Friday and played the full 90 minutes.

The former PSV Eindhoven midfielder has been capped 24 times for his nation, and played five games in Czech Republic’s qualification campaign for Euro 2024.

In a statement on Sunday, the Czech Republic football federation confirmed that Sadilek would miss the tournament after “suffering a laceration in his leg” following the bike fall.

“This is a big setback for us, because Michal is one of our experienced players,” Czech Republic coach head Hasek said. “It was not without reason that he wore the captain’s armband during the match against Malta.”

Czech Republic will play North Macedonia in a friendly on June 10 in their final warm-up match for the tournament.

They begin their Euro 2024 campaign against Portugal on June 18 before playing Georgia four days later and concluding their group stage campaign against Turkey on June 22.
