Maurizio Sarri has resigned as Lazio head coach.

Monday night’s 2-1 loss at home to Udinese left Lazio ninth in Serie A, 35 points off league leaders Inter and 11 points from Champions League qualification.

It was Lazio’s fourth defeat in a row in all competitions and followed the club’s elimination from the Champions League round of 16 by Bayern Munich last week.

Sarri’s assistant Giovanni Martusciello will take temporary charge of the first team following Sarri’s exit.

Lazio have picked up just seven points from their last eight league matches and are just two points from slipping into the bottom half of the Serie A table.

Sarri, 65, was appointed as Lazio’s head coach in the summer of 2021 and he guided the club to fifth- and second-placed finishes in the Italian top flight in his two full seasons in charge.

A former banker, Sarri rose to prominence with his stints in charge of Empoli and Napoli, before spending the 2018-19 season in the Chelsea dugout, where he won the Europa League.

The Italian then led Juventus to the Serie A title in 2020 before taking a year’s sabbatical away from coaching to return with Lazio.

Lazio are next in action when they travel to Frosinone on March 16.
