Arsenal defender Nuno Tavares has joined Serie A club Lazio on loan for the 2024-25 season.

In a statement announcing the deal, Lazio say Tavares’ move comes with an obligation to buy if certain sporting conditions are met.

The 24-year-old, who joined Arsenal from Benfica in 2021, has spent the last two seasons away from the club on loan, first at Marseille and then at Nottingham Forest last season.

He made 28 appearances for Arsenal but failed to adapt to life in north London.

Tavares joined Marseille on a season-long loan in 2022 and scored six goals in 39 appearances for the French side.

The left-back spent the 2023-24 campaign at Forest but made played just 12 times. That deal included a £12million ($15.6m) option to make the move permanent, which Forest did not take up.

Tavares is Arsenal’s second senior exit of the summer, with midfielder Albert Sambi Lokonga joining Sevilla on a season-long loan earlier on Monday.

Lazio finished seventh in last season’s Serie A and will play in the Europa League during the upcoming campaign.
