AC Milan are working to finalise an agreement to sign Alvaro Morata from Atletico Madrid.
The Serie A club have identified the Spain international as a player of interest and are keen on recruiting him ahead of the 2024-25 season.
Morata, 31, has a release clause in his current contract, and Milan are attempting to complete the formalities of the transfer that will see him move to Italy.
Atletico president Enrique Cerezo appeared to confirm that Morata was set to leave the club.
Asked if Morata would sign for Milan, Cerezo said to Spanish outlet Cuatro: “It seems to be yes. According to the press, he is signing today.
“First he said he was staying, then he said he was leaving. And at Atleti, whoever wants to stay, stays, and whoever doesn’t want to stay, leaves. We don’t have any problem. On the contrary, it bothers and annoys us because Morata is a magnificent player, a magnificent striker and a magnificent person. But he is the one who has to decide his destiny.”
Morata was named Spain captain in March 2023 and went on to play in all seven games of his nation’s victorious European Championship campaign this summer.
He scored 21 goals and provided five assists in 48 games across all competitions during the 2023-24 season, with five of those strikes coming in the Champions League.
The former Real Madrid and Chelsea striker joined Atletico from Juventus in the summer of 2022.
Morata has scored 35 goals in 130 Serie A games, winning the Italian top flight twice, the Coppa Italia three times and the Italian Super Cup once.
He has also scored 36 goals in 80 caps for his country.
