West Ham issue update on Michail Antonio after striker involved in car crash

West Have posted a second statement after confirming striker Michail Antonio was involved in a car crash on Saturday.

West Ham have issued a second statement on Michail Antonio after he was involved in a car crash, confirming he is now conscious and communicating.

On Saturday, an image circulated showing a Ferrari completely smashed in woodland and it was soon speculated by fans online that Antonio had been involved in an incident.

Shortly after, West Ham confirmed their No.9 was involved in an accident in the afternoon and said he had their “thoughts and prayers” as fans poured in with well wishes for a speedy recovery.

The club said they would inform fans of any developments in his situation and have now confirmed a positive update that Antonio is in a stable condition in a hospital in central London.

A statement read: “West Ham United can confirm that Michail Antonio is in a stable condition following a road traffic accident this afternoon in the Essex area.

“Michail is conscious and communicating and is currently under close supervision at a central London hospital.

“At this difficult time, we kindly ask everyone to respect the privacy of Michail and his family.

“The Club will make no further comment this evening, but will issue a further update in due course.”

Antonio made his 14th appearance of the season on Tuesday, coming on as a substitute in a 3-1 loss to Leicester City in Ruud van Nistelrooy’s first game in charge on Tuesday.

The 34-year-old joined the Hammers back in 2015, signing in a £7 million switch from Nottingham Forest. He’s since gone on make 322 appearances and score 83 goals – including a record 68 in the Premier League to make him the club’s top scorer in the competition.

The Jamaica international was previously deployed as a defender or winger before being converted into a striker and taking the No.9 shirt at the London Stadium.
