Former Watford striker Troy Deeney left viewers speechless after taking part in the specialist subject round on the Celebrity Mastermind quiz show.

If you didn’t know already, Celebrity Mastermind is split into two sections, with each of the four contestants being asked questions on a pre-chosen specialist subject for one and a half minutes.

They will then answer questions on general knowledge for two minutes, with the contestant who has the highest cumulative score winning the Celebrity Mastermind trophy.

The celebrity format was devised in 2004, with the likes of former Olympian Kriss Akabusi and EastEnders actor Jake Wood – who plays Max Branning – taking part in specials over this Christmas.

Last year, meanwhile, saw Deeney sit in the iconic chair, with the former striker choosing Sam Raimi’s SpiderMan trilogy – a set of SpiderMan films around Peter Parker which were released in 2002, 2004 and 2007 respectively.

The episode, which aired at the same time as Deeney’s Forest Green side drew 0-0 with Gillingham in League Two, saw the 36-year-old fail to score a single point in the ‘specialist subject’.

After his 90 seconds had passed, host Clive Myrie said: “That chair, this atmosphere.”

“It’s intense,” Deeney agreed, before laughing to himself as he exited the stage.

Deeney did fare far better in the general knowledge round, picking up six points and finishing in third place – putting his scoreless round potentially into the misfortune category.

The trophy was won by OJ Borg, with Jasmine Harman finishing in second place.

Under a month after the episode was aired, Deeney was sacked as Forest Green manager on January 16 after failing to win a single game in his six matches in charge.

He described his team as having ‘too many babies‘ in it during a post-match press conference, and also called right-back Fankaty Dabo ‘awful’ in a separate interview – though later apologised to the ex-Coventry star for making public remarks about him.

Steve Cotterill replaced the 36-year-old and inspired something of an early upturn in form, but that form fell away and he could not prevent Forest Green from being relegated to the National League. They are currently third in the top tier of non-league.

Deeney, meanwhile, now presents on talkSPORT and is a regular contributor on Match of the Day. At the beginning of the 2024/25 season, he took over from Garth Crooks as the selector of BBC’s Premier League Team of the Week.
