Jhon Duran sent more than 40,000 fans into delirium on Wednesday night after he scored a late winner for Aston Villa in their Champions League clash against Bayern Munich.

The 20-year-old Colombian striker, who has already established himself as one of the best supersubs in Premier League history, replaced Ollie Watkins in the 70th minute.

As we’ve seen over the past few weeks, Duran has the ability to make an instant impact in games.

And just nine minutes after coming on, he chipped Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer from 25 yards out in a moment that will live long in the memory of every Aston Villa supporter.

Many inside Villa Park were hopeful ahead of their first home fixture in Europe’s elite competition since 1983 but not many would have predicted such an ending.

Just listen to the noise when Duran found the back of the net.

At one stage, it looked like Duran was certain to leave Villa after he publicly confirmed his desire to leave the Premier League club during an interview with the Colombian press.

“I take it very calmly with the help of my agent and my dad, we are taking everything little by little,” he said in July. “That my name is being mentioned by such big teams, it is very important for my career.”

Duran added: “I’m happy that there are these rumours and let’s hope that something concrete happens.”

Aston Villa appeared to value at £40 million and a number of clubs expressed an interest, including West Ham and Chelsea, who made a last-minute bid for the talented striker.

But their approached was dismissed, with Unai Emery keen on the former Chicago Fire striker to remain at Villa Park.

Speaking after Duran scored a dramatic late winner against West Ham in August, Emery said: “We believe in him and his potential.”

He added: “We are open to working with him like he did today, helping the team, being available when we need him and today he was fantastic.

“Always I am very committed with him to get the best out of him as a player and even as a person. Some mistakes we have to accept and of course not repeat it. At the beginning I wanted him here and nothing changed after the match today.”

So far, Duran has netted six goals in nine games for the Villains this season; an output that is up there with the very best.
