Sky Sports reporter reveals what happened between Max Verstappen and Lando Norris in ‘lively’ drivers meeting – F1

Sky Sports reported Craig Slater has revealed what went on between Max Verstappen and Lando Norris during a ‘lively’ drivers’ briefing as the FIA are set to make a drastic change.

Last weekend, reigning Formula 1 world champion Verstappen and McLaren star Norris battled for third place in the closing stages of the United States Grand Prix at the Circuit of the Americas.

After being adjudged to have gained an advantage off-track, Norris, who finished the race in P3, was handed a controversial five-second penalty which meant he was demoted to P4.

Ahead of this weekend’s Mexican Grand Prix, it was revealed on Thursday that McLaren had requested a right of review over the Norris and Verstappen incident. However, the request was rejected.

Prior to Saturday’s qualifying session, Sky Sports F1 reporter Slater spoke about what happened between Verstappen and Norris during Friday’s drivers’ meeting.

He said: “It was a lively drivers’ meeting in Mexico City overnight and there were direct exchanges between Lando Norris and Max Verstappen about defending and overtaking. But I’ve been told they were “calm” and “respectful”.

“The meeting kicked off with the drivers asking the FIA how stewards make decisions in cases like the Verstappen and Norris clash. They wanted to better understand the process.”

Slater added: “Ultimately, there is an understanding that the rules will never be perfect. The appetite is to tighten wordings and try to define the guidelines better.”

On the back of that meeting, it has been reported that the FIA will now revise their racing guidelines.

As reported by BBC Sport, an FIA spokesperson said: “There was a general commitment to continue to update the driving standards guidelines.

“Bearing in mind the drivers requested the drivers’ racing guidelines and agreed to their introduction along with the Grand Prix Drivers’ Association, each time they are updated it is consultation with the drivers.

“It is generally accepted that they should continue to evolve, not because of isolated incidents such as Austin, but driven by the desire to bring consistency to determinations and decisions from the stewards.”
