Roy Keane gives response to Ipswich car park incident and reveals what prompted furious confrontation

Keane was confronted by an Ipswich Town fan at Portman Road last month.

Roy Keane has made his first public comments on the incident which saw him be confronted by an Ipswich Town fan at Portman Road.

The Irishman was approached by an angry Tractor Boys fan while working for Sky Sports on the game between Ipswich and Manchester United last month.

The fan, Neil Finbow, claims to have told Keane that he ‘set us back five years and ruined our football club’, having had an unsuccessful spell as Ipswich manager between 2010 and 2011.

He added: “I also mentioned he wasn’t fit to step foot anywhere near our ground … I hate the bloke and that’s been boiling up since he got sacked all those years ago.”

Keane offered to meet the fan ‘in the car park’ – but speaking on the latest episode of ‘Stick to Football’, the Irishman isn’t sure what all the fuss is about regarding the incident.

He said: “I wasn’t angry! I was calm. I went over to the guy twice… what happens when we do matches, they send us down after the game and fans can be up and down, emotional. People think they can abuse you and it seems to be we’re supposed to accept that.

“I went over twice and said, ‘No problem. If you want to abuse me or have a go at me, but I’m working’.

“He’s swearing in front of kids. I said, ‘If you want to see my afterwards, I’ll see you in the car park’.

“But I’ll ask you a question, where else was I going to see him? They were obviously asked to meet the lounge. ‘I’ll meet you at McDonalds’? No, I’ll meet him in the car park.

“I wanted a chat. I’m not offering somebody out – I’m 53 years old with five kids and two grandkids. And he wasn’t there [in the car park]!

“There were other idiots in the car park and other people hanging round. But I don’t get it. The angle people have is that I was asking people out for a fight.”
