Pep Guardiola says that Rodri is unlikely to feature against Ipswich this weekend but suggested that Ilkay Gundogan could play following his return to the club.

Rodri has not yet trained with the team due to the hamstring injury he picked up during the European Championship final against England in July, and while Guardiola said that he is close to a return to training, he is unlikely that he will be back in action on Saturday.

“He’s getting better,” Guardiola said. “He’s not with the group, today he will do partial training, maybe. I don’t think (he will start), we will see today and tomorrow.”

Guardiola had said during his press conference that City were waiting for international clearance for Gundogan to play against Ipswich after his signing was confirmed on Friday morning, but that clearance has since come through.

Guardiola said: “He gives us an incredible alternative with the way he wants to play, he adapted in two to three words, he knows everything, he doesn’t need time to settle. If tomorrow he has to play, OK, he knows everything.”

Savinho, who signed for City this summer from Troyes, is in contention to play after being substituted against Chelsea due to a knee injury last weekend.

“He feels better, I don’t think he is completely top but he is part of training and developing really well. We will see what we are going to do with him.”
