A former Premier League legend was accused of cheating after his girlfriend believed a football manager tweet was about him.
The new season is well underway, and with it comes a new edition of the beloved Football Manager series.
Fans will have to wait until November to get their roads to glory started, but that hasn’t stopped social media getting excited as they talk about their best memories on the game.
And one Premier League star has revealed that the game once got him in serious trouble after his girlfriend discovered a football manager screenshot that she thought suggested he had been cheating on her.
Nine years ago while he was playing for Tottenham Hotspur, Andros Townsend found himself in the doghouse when girlfriend Hazel O’Sullivan found a social media post from the game saying that he had been fined for “failing to report to the training ground for a training session”.
O’Sullivan believed that the fine was real and immediately began to worry where he could have been if he was not at home or training.
Speaking on talkSPORT, Townsend explained: “I get a text from her one day and I receive a screenshot from Twitter.
“As you do, she was searching my name on Twitter and a fine came up – Andros Townsend accepts his fine for reporting late to training.
“So her mind is going off; if he wasn’t at training and he wasn’t at home then where was he? It could have been a real sticky one!
“But she’s messaged me and it turns out the screen grab is from the popular video game Football Manager.
“Someone’s obviously posted in on Twitter having a laugh on Football Manager and she’s thought it was real!”

Thankfully for Townsend, he was able to explain that his girlfriend had been pranked on social media and that he had not been cheating.
The pair are still together and have since got married and had two children, Aria Valentina and Andros Jr.
Townsend now plays for Turkish club Antalyaspor from Luton Town on Deadline Day and made his debut earlier this month.
