Nick Pope claims he was never given an explanation for his England omission and is determined to reclaim a spot in the national squad.
The Newcastle United No 1 has not been called up by England since May 2023, when he withdrew after opting to undergo surgery on his hand.
His most recent national-team appearance came against Germany in the Nations League on September 26, 2022, and he was overlooked by Gareth Southgate for Euro 2024, although Pope did spend five months out last season with a shoulder injury.
“No, I don’t think so,” the 10-cap international said following Newcastle’s 2-0 pre-season friendly victory over Hull City, when asked if he was given an explanation for being left out of England squads. It’s part of football, it’s part of life.
“Obviously it’s a difficult decision for the manager. England (and everything around it) always makes it a tough decision for the manager.
“You saw that in the summer during the group stages and obviously England were winning games and getting through knockout games and yet there’s still such a high level of scrutiny. It’s a tough job.
“Gareth gave me my debut and my 10 caps were all under him so I’m never, ever going to speak ill of him and the decisions he makes.”
Pope has excelled for Newcastle since joining from Burnley two years ago, playing a crucial role in leading the club to a fourth-placed finish and Champions League qualification in 2022-23.
At 32, Pope is in his prime as a goalkeeper and still believes he can break back into the England set-up under Southgate’s successor.
“Of course. I don’t feel like I’m over the hill just yet!” Pope said of his England ambitions. “I feel like I’m in a team now and in a place personally as a player to be able to make an impact.”
