Newcastle United are in talks with Burnley over a potential deal to sign goalkeeper James Trafford.

The Premier League side are prioritising bringing in a new shot-stopper in the transfer window and have identified Trafford as a player of interest.

Discussions between Newcastle and Burnley have begun, with the player believed to be valued by Newcastle between £15-18million.

Burnley’s relegation to the Championship means they know some of their squad will move on and they need to raise funds due to the loss of television revenue.

Trafford joined Burnley from Manchester City last summer in a deal worth up to £19m.

He made 28 Premier League appearances for the Lancashire club before being replaced by Arijanet Muric for the final 10 games of the 2023-24 season.

The 21-year-old was a surprise inclusion in Gareth Southgate’s preliminary 33-man England squad for the European Championship but was eventually cut as teams competing at the tournament in Germany were required to trim their teams down to 26 players by Friday, June 7.

Trafford, who never made a senior appearance for City, came through their youth ranks and played prominently in their youth teams.

He spent the 2022-23 season on loan at Bolton Wanderers in League One, where he kept 26 clean sheets in 52 games across all competitions.

He also played a starring role in England Under-21’s European Championship-winning side last summer, completing the tournament without conceding a goal and saving a last-minute penalty in the final against Spain.
