Newcastle United have submitted an opening bid for Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi.

The Athletic reported last week that the St James’ Park club had opened negotiations with their Premier League counterparts regarding a move for the England international.

The proposal was made in recent days as the Tyneside club bid to pull off a significant coup ahead of the new season. The situation remains ongoing.

The 24-year-old’s contract at Selhurst Park expires in 2026 and there has been no sign of him extending those terms.

He is high on the wish-list of a number of top European clubs but Newcastle are the first to formalise their interest with an offer.

The central defender, who previously had a loan stint at Swansea City, joined Palace from Chelsea in the summer of 2021 and made 111 appearances for the south London club, scoring five goals.

Guehi impressed during this summer’s European Championship for England, starting six of his nation’s seven matches during their run to the final — sitting out the quarter-final clash against Switzerland through suspension.

Palace have already strengthened their centre-back department this summer with the signing of Chadi Riad from Real Betis.

Oliver Glasner’s side have also secured the signings of winger Ismaila Sarr and midfielder Daichi Kamada, with Michael Olise, James Tomkins and Jairo Riedewald among those who have left Selhurst Park.
