Manchester United’s summer signing Leny Yoro has successfully undergone surgery on a foot injury, the club confirmed on Monday.

The defender now faces a three-month rehabilitation period after suffering a fractured metatarsal in United’s defeat to Arsenal during their pre-season tour of the United States.

The 18-year-old, who joined from Lille in a deal worth up to €70million (£60m), was forced off in the first half at SoFi Stadium, Los Angeles, and subsequently replaced by academy graduate Rhys Bennett.

Scans later showed the France Under-21 international had suffered a fracture to the fifth metatarsal in his left foot.

Yoro will miss United’s Premier League games against Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa — but could make his return in time for the visit of Chelsea to Old Trafford on November 2.

Erik ten Hag’s pre-season injury woes were compounded on Sunday as defensive trio Aaron Wan‑Bissaka, Victor Lindelof and Jonny Evans were all forced off during United’s pre-season defeat to Liverpool.

The Dutchman’s fitness concerns come after the 2023-24 campaign — which ended with the club’s lowest ever Premier League finish — was hampered by an injury crisis that at one point saw six first-team defenders unavailable.

Striker Rasmus Hojlund will miss six weeks after suffering a hamstring injury in the same pre-season game as Yoro.

United play Manchester City in this season’s Community Shield at Wembley on Saturday, August 10.

They begin the new Premier League campaign at home to Fulham on August 16.
