Manchester United have completed the signing of Manuel Ugarte from Paris Saint-Germain.

The 23-year-old has signed a five-year contract at Old Trafford with the option to extend for a further 12 months.

The Uruguay international joins in a deal worth €50million (£42.3m; $55.8m) plus a further €10m in add-ons.

Ugarte said upon signing: “It is an incredible feeling to join a club of this magnitude; one that is admired all around the world. The project that the football leadership discussed with me is extremely exciting; Manchester United is an ambitious club and I am an ambitious player.

“The passion of supporters is something that is very important to me; I know how incredible United fans are and I cannot wait to experience Old Trafford. I’m someone who is so determined to succeed; I will sacrifice and give everything for my teammates. Together we will fight to win trophies and reach the level where this club needs to be.”

Sporting director Dan Ashworth added: “Signing Manuel was another of our primary targets for this summer. He is among the very best ball-winning midfield players in the world and has an excellent record at both club and international level. His qualities, experience and passion will be a great complement to our strong group of midfielders.

“Manuel is a player we’ve watched closely, and we are excited to see the positive impact he will make on the pitch and in the dressing room as we continue to strive for success.”

Ugarte’s arrival was facilitated by Scott McTominay’s departure from Old Trafford. The Scotland international completed his move to Napoli earlier on deadline day.

The defensive midfielder has 22 caps for Uruguay and was named in the Copa America team of the tournament.

Ugarte joined PSG from Sporting last summer and went on to make 37 appearances for the club.

He made just 21 league starts, however, but did feature from the start five times out of six in the Champions League group stage.

United have now made five summer signings with Ugarte joining Leny Yoro, Matthijs de Ligt, Noussair Mazraoui and Joshua Zirkzee.

Erik ten Hag’s have opened the new season with a win over Fulham before suffering a 2-1 defeat at Brighton & Hove Albion last Saturday.

They are next in action against Liverpool on Sunday.
