Manchester City have considered a move to sign Orri Oskarsson from FC Copenhagen as backup to Erling Haaland.

The reigning Premier League champions now seem unlikely to pursue a deal for the 19-year-old striker but they are firm admirers and he is set to depart Copenhagen before the summer transfer window closes.

Oskarsson has emerged among Europe’s most prolific attackers, starting the season with seven goals in 11 appearances and attracting a host of suitors. It is anticipated the Iceland international will leave for around €20million (£16.9m; $22.4m) plus add-ons.

He is high on the list of targets City have been exploring if they are to bolster Pep Guardiola’s front line before Friday’s deadline, which includes Celtic’s Kyogo Furuhashi.

City are not expected to advance their interest for the time being, however, there are other Premier League teams pursuing Oskarsson while the likes of Porto and Real Sociedad are also in the frame.

Despite seeing Julian Alvarez depart for Atletico Madrid and Oscar Bobb sidelined by an injury, Guardiola and club bosses are happy with their existing personnel and will only recruit if the right opportunity arises.
