Manchester City defender Joao Cancelo has completed his move to Al Hilal.

The Athletic reported on Tuesday that Cancelo was close to sealing a transfer to the Saudi Pro League side.

The Portugal international has now completed his permanent move to the Middle Eastern club in a deal worth around €25million (£21m; $27.9m).

Cancelo returned to City this summer having spent last season on loan at Barcelona but was not included in any of their three matchday squads to begin the campaign.

The 30-year-old joins Neymar, Kalidou Koulibaly, Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, Ruben Neves and Aleksandar Mitrovic in swapping European football for Al Hilal, who are coached by former Benfica boss Jorge Jesus.

Cancelo played 42 times for Barcelona last season, registering four goals and five assists. He previously spent the second half of the 2022-23 campaign on loan at Bayern Munich, where he made 21 appearances, having fallen out of favour at City.

Cancelo had previously been a key player at City under Pep Guardiola and was a regular in the Premier League-winning teams in 2020-21 and 2021-22.

He is also a regular in the Portugal national team and represented his country at the European Championship earlier this summer, starting all of their games bar their dead rubber group match as they reached the quarter-finals.
