Manchester United fans have called out Gary Neville for what he said on commentary during their side’s 4-3 Carabao Cup defeat to Tottenham.
United were knocked out of the Carabao Cup at the quarter-final stage as a result of the defeat, which saw six second-half goals scored.
Spurs went 3-0 up after Dominic Solanke capitalised on a defensive error from Lisandro Martinez, and the hosts appeared to have a straight-forward route to the semi-final heading into the final 30 minutes of the contest.
But a mistake from Fraser Forster allowed Joshua Zirkzee to make it 3-1 on 63 minutes, and his failure to clear the ball quickly enough caused his eventual clearance to ricochet off Amad Diallo and into the net for United‘s second goal.
Noussair Mazraoui missed an opportunity to make it 3-3, before Spurs instead made it 4-2 through Son Heung-min’s goal directly from a corner.
Jonny Evans’ header then concluded a dramatic half of goalscoring at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, with United then running out of time to equalise.
At the end of the match, Neville claimed that Tottenham deserved to win the tie and make it through to the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup.
But United fans disagreed, with one writing on Twitter: “I’m sure he didn’t watch the game. We were better than Spurs.”
A second added: “What game was he watching?”
A third said: “We were miles better ffs.”
However, other fans pointed out that the fact United conceded four goals away from home, and made several mistakes that allowed Tottenham to be clinical in front of goal, ultimately meant that they did not deserve anything from the game.
One wrote: “With all those mistakes maybe they [Spurs] did.”
A second said: “You can’t concede four goals and think you deserved to win.”
And a third stated: “We conceded four goals mate so we don’t deserve to win either.”
