New Brighton & Hove Albion head coach Fabian Hurzeler is set to name Jonas Scheuermann as his number two for next season.
Hurzeler, 31, was officially unveiled as Roberto De Zerbi’s successor on Tuesday morning after he signed a three-year deal through to June 2027. He will become the youngest permanent head coach to manage in the Premier League when he takes charge of Brighton’s top-flight opener against Everton on August 17.
Hurzeler will be accompanied in the dugout by Scheuermann, who is close to joining from Bundesliga side Augsburg.
Scheuermann, 38, has held the position of assistant coach at Augsburg since 2017 having previously worked as manager of German lower-league side, SV Waldeck-Obermenzing.
Current first team coach Andrew Crofts and goalkeeping coach Jack Stern will remain at the south coast club as part of Hurzeler’s backroom staff.
They will be joined by Marco Knoop, who was goalkeeping coach at St Pauli under Hurzeler during their promotion-winning campaign last term.
The German is understood to be integral to implementing Hurzeler’s plan for playing out from the back. His official title is yet to be confirmed by the club.
Hurzeler said of Knopp in May: “Under him, our goalkeepers have taken a big step forward and thus created an important prerequisite for us to be able to successfully implement our idea of football.”
Brighton are touring Japan as part of the 2024-25 pre-season fans and will face Kashima Antlers and Tokyo Verdy in friendlies in late July. They will also play Queens Park Rangers at Loftus Road on August 3.
