Harvey Elliott backs Lee Carsley to replace Gareth Southgate as England manager

Liverpool midfielder Harvey Elliott believes Lee Carsley is the perfect candidate to succeed Gareth Southgate as England manager.

The Football Association (FA) have been considering their options since Southgate stood down following the European Championship in Germany.

Elliott has worked closely with Carsley in the England Under-21s set-up and was part of the squad which won the under-21s Euros last summer. He is convinced that promoting from within would be the best move by the FA.

“Lee is an unbelievable manager and an unbelievable guy,” he said.

“He is ready to step up. There have been a lot of big clubs sniffing around him and that is credit to himself and his coaching.

“Whenever I step on the pitch for England at that level I just have freedom to enjoy my football. I feel like he is ready. They are conversations for them (at the FA).”

Elliott enjoyed an excellent season for Liverpool in 2023-24 as he contributed four goals and 11 assists in 53 appearances, but he missed out on selection for the Euro 2024.

His wait for a first senior cap goes on and he is hoping his form for Liverpool will propel him into the England set-up ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

Reflecting on being overlooked for the Euros, he said: “Of course I wanted to be there but they have their certain ways and their players that they monitor and that they want to pick and that’s just what they do.

“At the same time that I was disappointed I had a nice break. The summer before I had the Euros with the 21s so I didn’t get a long break.

“It was good to unwind and go and see family and chill out and get my head down for this pre-season, especially with the new manager I wanted to be fresh and ready to go.”
