European giants 'emerge as shock contenders to sign Mo Salah' after Liverpool star's cryptic social media post

Negotiations to extend Salah’s Liverpool contract have reportedly stalled.

A massive European club have reportedly emerged as a potential contender to sign Mohamed Salah in the summer amid the Liverpool star’s ongoing contract negotiations.

Since joining Liverpool from Roma in 2017, Salah has undoubtedly been one of, if not the most important player for the Reds, scoring an incredible 220 goals for the club.

But, with the winger’s contract set to expire at the end of the 2024/25 season, rumours have started to circulating that the Egyptian could be set to join another team this summer.

And now, a new report has named a shock European giant as one of the most likely destinations for Salah to go to should he decide against extending his time at Anfield.

According to Spanish outlet Sport, La Liga giants Barcelona are keen on bringing Salah to the club in the summer should he become available as a free agent.

It would mark the second time that the Spanish side attempted to bring the Egyptian winger to the Nou Camp having tried to do so two years ago under the guidance of former manager Xavi.

Their pursuit in 2022 once again came at a time when Salah’s future at Liverpool was up in the air with his contract set to expire following the end of the 2021/22 season.

But, while he decided to sign an extension to stay with Liverpool back in 2022, he is now reportedly open to a new challenge and is said to like the Barcelona project.

However, the outlet claim that Barcelona’s top priority remains Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams, who was linked with a move following Spain’s victory at the Euro 2024 tournament.

The news comes after Salah posted a cryptic message on social media following the thrilling Premier League clash against Brighton on Sunday, leaving Liverpool fans concerned about his future.

Posting on X, the winger wrote: “No matter what happens, I will never forget what scoring at Anfield feels like.”

While some fans are confident this confirmed Salah’s imminent departure, Liverpool manager Arne Slot appeared to suggest that this was not the case.

He said: “You interpret (the post) in a way maybe other people don’t. I don’t look at Instagram posts from my players, I only talk to them which is the advantage I have.

“Mo is in a very good place at the moment, as long as he has been at Liverpool he has been in a good place.

“It is important how he plays and what he says in conversations and not how you guys interpret his posts.”
