Erik ten Hag’s former coach at Manchester United has aimed a shock dig at the manager following the club’s latest setback.
Man United suffered a damaging 3-0 home defeat to Tottenham last weekend.
Ten Hag has already led his side to three defeats in the Premier League as the Red Devils languish in 13th place in the table.
Pressure is beginning to mount on the Dutchman following a summer of intense transfer speculation, with several managers linked with replacing him at Old Trafford before the board decided to stick with their current boss.
Last season, Ten Hag salvaged the 2023/24 campaign with FA Cup triumph over Manchester City.
He had the likes of Benni McCarthy in his backroom staff for the victory at Wembley Stadium.
And McCarthy has shared his thoughts on what’s going wrong at Man United this season, referencing the training standards of some in the squad.
He also said the team must follow the example of Bruno Fernandes and Diogo Dalot if they want to turn their fortunes around.
“If some of the Manchester United players had what Bruno (Fernandes) and Diogo (Dalot) have, it would have been easier to achieve good results,” he said.
“They both trained with incredible concentration, giving everything they had. Some of the others didn’t do the same.
“This ended up limiting United’s progress, because some players weren’t training to the best of their ability. Even in games, the data showed us that some players were at their peak performance and others a little below.”

McCarthy continued by claiming Ten Hag ‘lacks’ a bit of fire.
“In modern football, I believe that players want to see a bit more passion in their coach,” he added. “They need to feel that the coach is with them and willing to fight alongside them.
“Tactically, I feel that Erik is at the top. He lacks a bit of that fire, that passion. That’s where we differ, him and I.”
