Nottingham Forest hope Danilo could be back in training by December following successful surgery to repair his broken ankle.

The midfielder had an operation on Tuesday to rectify the damaged caused by the injury he sustained on the opening day of the Premier League season, eight minutes into Forest’s 1-1 draw with Bournemouth.

Nuno Espirito Santo says the key for Forest is not to make Danilo feel pressured into a return. But Forest are hopeful that the 23-year-old Brazilian will make a playing return for the final months of the season.

“Danilo has surgery two days ago. The surgery went well. Now we have to be patient,” said Nuno.

“First of all the important thing is that he takes his time; that he does not make any mistakes. For now, he is not allowed to put his foot on the ground (or put weight through it). It is a small detail, but it is a big detail.

“We do not want to rush him, we do not want to put him under any pressure to come back. He has to settle down.”

Forest face Nuno’s former club Wolves at the City Ground on Saturday, when the head coach hopes to have another midfielder, Ryan Yates, back available.

Yates was pulled out of the team shortly before kick-off last night, as Forest were beaten on penalties by Newcastle in the EFL Cup, following a 1-1 draw, due to illness.

Elliot Anderson, who was not due to start, came into the starting XI in his place – and produced a strong display against his former club.

“Yates was ill. He had a problem with his stomach and he could not participate. He was due to start the game against Newcastle. But he did not feel well, so Elliot came in and he played really well. Ibrahim (Sangare) also played good,” said Nuno.

“But let us see what happens on Saturday; let us see who is available, because having players with different characteristics available, is something that is really good for us.”

Forest are next in action at home to Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday.
