Brighton & Hove Albion are close to completing the signing of Matt O’Riley from Celtic.
The 23-year-old midfielder scored 19 goals across all competitions last season for Celtic, winning the club’s player of the year award.
O’Riley is set to become Brighton’s eighth summer signing, following the arrivals of Georginio Rutter, Yankuba Minteh, Mats Wieffer, Amario Cozier-Duberry, Malick Yalcouye, Brajan Gruda and Ibrahim Osman, who has since joined Feyenoord on loan. On Friday, Fenerbahce said they have given permission for Turkey international Ferdi Kadioglu to travel to Brighton for talks over his possible transfer.
O’Riley began his career at Fulham but made just five first-team appearances for the club before joining MK Dons in the summer of 2020.
After scoring 10 goals across a season and a half for MK Dons in League One, O’Riley joined Celtic in January 2022. He has won six trophies for Celtic since his move to Glasgow, including three successive league titles.
O’Riley represented England up to under-21 level but has played two senior matches for Denmark, whom he qualifies to play for through his mother. He was not included in the Denmark squad which competed at the European Championship earlier this summer.
Brighton began their season with a 3-0 win at Everton last weekend. Fabian Hurzeler’s side are next in action against Manchester United later today (Saturday).
