Asmir Begovic is set for a medical this week ahead of re-joining Everton on a free transfer.
Should no problems arise during the medical, a deal is expected to be concluded quickly and there is hope Begovic, 37, will be available for this Saturday’s game against Tottenham Hotspur.
The goalkeeper has been without a club since his contract with Championship side Queens Park Rangers expired earlier this summer.
Begovic will provide back-up for No 1 Jordan Pickford and his deputy Joao Virginia. Last season’s third-choice Andy Lonergan left on a free transfer earlier this summer and Begovic’s potential arrival may open up the prospect of at least one of Everton’s young ‘keepers — Billy Crellin and Harry Tyrer — leaving on loan.
Begovic spent two seasons at Everton between 2021 and 2023, making ten appearances.
The former Bosnia and Herzegovina international has made 256 Premier League appearances for Everton, Stoke City, Everton, Chelsea and Portsmouth, keeping 65 clean sheets. He also made 63 appearances for his national team.
During the 2023-24 campaign, Begovic kept 13 clean sheets in 46 Championship appearances for QPR.
Everton return to action this weekend after losing their opening Premier League game 3-0 at home against Brighton & Hove Albion last Saturday.
