Carlos Vela joined LAFC in 2018 and his stated aim was to win the MLS title with the Los Angeles-based team.
It has taken four years, but he has finally achieved that goal as LAFC beat Philadelphia Union 3-0 on penalties after a dramatic 3-3 draw.
Vela‘s contract with LAFC runs out in 2023 and now it seems that his cycle with the club could be coming to a natural end, as a return to LIGA MX in his native Mexico could be on the cards.
« The work has its rewards as I arrived at a team you didn’t know, with the uncertainty of what may or may not happen, but today I feel that the cycle is over, » Vela said.
« Obviously, I want more and I want to continue enjoying Los Angeles, LAFC, winning more titles.
« But now, with a clearer conscience, with a calmer and more peaceful body, saying ‘well, now I gave them the first one’. »
Vela’s MLS career
Vela has made his mark in MLS, thanks to his great performances. He has made 139 appearances since 2018 and has scored 79 goals plus 49 assists.
He won the MLS Golden Boot and MLS Most Valuable Player in 2019 and the CONCACAF Champions League Best XI in 2020.
Carlos Vela could return to Liga MX
Vela also mentioned in a recent interview with ESPN that he would like to play in Mexico.
« I had some offers, I talked to some people from teams in Mexico, but as I always said my first choice was to stay in Los Angeles, » he said.
« If that didn’t happen, I was going to look at the options I had in Europe, which was my second choice. »
