When football fans think of Lionel Messi, they think of Barcelona and his achievements. But the truth is the Argentinian’s first love came before his move to Spain as a youngster.
Messi grew up a supporter of Newell’s Old Boys when he was young boy, and now the 36-year-old is set to play against his boyhood club with Inter Miami.
On February 15, Miami’s DRV PNK Stadium will witness the MLS outfit taking on their Argentinian counterparts as part of their preseason schedule. Messi’s team are coached by another former Barcelona alum, Gerardo ‘Tata’ Martino, and the pair will face the team from their hometown, Rosario, where they grew up in the youth ranks.
Messi made the leap to Barcelona after playing for Newell’s in his formative years, while Martino holds the record for the most appearances made in Newell’s’ history. He also the leading figure of their title wins in 1988, 1990, 1991 and 1992. In addition, he won another title in 2013 as manager.
Messi has previously expressed his wish to return to his native Argentina to play for Newell’s before he hangs up his boots. However, with a contract until December 2025, his move to the United States will put his plans on hold for now at least.
Martino happy to face his past
“I am delighted to be able to welcome my beloved Newell’s to our home in Miami. It will be a special game because of what Newell’s Old Boys means to me,” Martino said in December.
The question remains as to whether Sergio Busquets will be able to take part in the match as the former Spain international picked up an injury in their last game.
Tickets are already on sale for the game, and those who want to attend will have to dig deep into their pockets, with seat prices ranging from $120 to an eye-watering $7,500 dollars.
